Operations Manager

Location: Biffa Edinburgh Industrial & Commercial Depot

Fixed Term Contract for a minimum of 6 months, with the possibility of becoming a permanent appointment.

A quick look at the role.

To efficiently and effectively manage the day-to-day operations of the Depot, whilst delivering and maintaining first class customer service against pre-defined business KPIs. This role will work alongside the Transport Manager role to support the depot's operational, safety, transport and service performance.

 

Why it’s an opportunity not to be wasted.

  • Work closely with Depot Manager to ensure depot performance meets required standards while maintaining cost efficiencies within the operation.  Deputise for Depot Manager during periods of absence.
  • Provide leadership, support and management of a traffic dispatcher team comprising 6 established personnel.  Monitor performance of the traffic office team through Depot KPI’s- Service, Safety and Profitability – and personal reviews.
  • Oversee a large operation comprising 31 vehicles, 50 drivers and 35 routes (including backshifts) per weekday – plus some weekend services.
  • Maintain personal development plans for all direct reports, including providing performance feedback to drivers and supporting their career objectives.
  • Deal effectively with underperformance, absence management and implementing disciplinary procedures as appropriate.  Manage driver planned absence to maintain required manpower levels throughout the year.
  • Manage the planning process for mobilisation of new contracts, short term projects and re-routes. Oversee planning for seasonal changes such as Bank Holidays and the Festive period,  ensuring the resources and routes are optimised according to customer needs.
  • Maximise the customer’s experience of their service from Biffa by liaising with customer services, the commercial team and monitoring reports which highlight critical service indicators. From time to time this may include customer visits.
  • Ensure that all aspects of Health & Safety are adhered to, including H&S induction and training, operating procedures, near miss reporting and emergency procedures.  This includes ensuring safe systems of work at waste collection points, which will require close working with off-site colleagues for some contracts.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with internal and external customers.

Requirements

Here’s what we require:

  • Operational management experience in the waste or similar industries.
  • Preferable knowledge of the waste industry and regulations.
  • Demonstrable ability to prioritise workloads, respond to urgent tasks and delegate appropriately to meet the demands of a variable environment.
  • Collaborative and engaging management of a large workforce.
  • People and health & safety management in a unionised environment.
  • Proven track record of working to clearly defined service delivery KPI’s.
  • Demonstrable experience of successful resource management.
  • Good working experience of MS systems, including Microsoft Teams.  Computer literate and able to learn various systems which are specific, and central to, Biffa operations.
  • Familiar with P&L accounts and other financial management practices to control costs and maximise profitability.
