Company Background

Oxford headquartered Tokamak Energy is widely recognised as a world-leader in high temperature superconductor (HTS) magnet, design, numerical modelling, and prototyping. This expertise was borne from our path towards commercial fusion energy in developing spherical tokamaks with high HTS magnets. We have pioneered these technologies since 2012, long before their importance was widely recognised.

We believe that our HTS developments will usher in the high temperature superconductor era which will enable fusion for all and impact many other industries. Our new dedicated commercial HTS business unit, in collaboration with key manufacturing partners, is focussed on becoming the leading supplier of HTS magnets to multiple markets. We aim to provide magnet systems for other fusion companies to accelerate that industry, as well as to address exciting new applications for HTS, including propulsion in water, air and space, renewable energy and science.

Tokamak Energy was founded in 2009 as a spin-off from the UK’s Culham Centre for Fusion Energy and currently employs a growing team of over 250 people with experts from the UK and around the world. It combines world leading scientific, engineering, industrial and commercial capabilities. The company has 70 families of patent applications and has raised $250 million, comprising $200m from private investors and $50m from the UK and US governments. Our US subsidiary, Tokamak Energy Inc, was established in 2019.

Come and be a part of a dynamic and innovative team who are striving to provide a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all

Overview of the role

This role sits in the Cryogenics Systems Team within the Magnet Business Unit (MBU) at Tokamak Energy, and is required to meet the expanding needs of the MBU. We are looking for someone who can oversee the build of cryogenics systems through the project lifecycle - from initial concept design to delivery of a complete system. These projects will either be test cryostats for magnets on site at TE or part of the deliverables of magnet systems for external customers.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop innovative cryogenic systems to support the high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology and for other requirements to support fusion projects and commercialisation of the company’s HTS magnet technology.
  • Work with external collaborators as required to develop cryogenic systems and associated thermal and mechanical models of cryogenic systems.
  • Take ownership of the thermodynamic and mechanical development of the cryogenic system designs, ensuring the work is focussed on the project objectives.
  • Take ownership of the materials specifications allocated for cryogenic system designs to ensure they are appropriate for the complex system.
  • Interpret test results and produce clear written reports.
  • Ensure cryogenic system development projects stay focussed to deliver against the defined SMART objectives of the project.
  • Liaise with project and program managers, and other stakeholders internal to Tokamak Energy as requested.
  • Offer guidance to less experienced magnet engineers and technicians.
  • Generate and document intellectual property.

Requirements

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant Engineering or Physics based discipline
  • Demonstrate experience working with and/or delivering cryogenic systems or compressed gases.
  • A good understanding of modelling techniques required for heat-load calculations for conduction cooled and flow-cooled structures
  • High degree of self-organisation, motivation and commitment to working in defined timescales.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work in a mixed team or engineers, physicists, designers and technicians designing innovative and complex devices.
  • Demonstrate track record of innovation, creativity and project delivery in a complex engineering /technology development environment.

Desirable

  • A working knowledge of the thermo-modelling capabilities of ANSYS is desirable.
  • Experience of working with MatLab and Python is desirable.
  • A working knowledge of the thermo-modelling capabilities of COMSOL is desirable.
  • Knowledge of CFD modelling techniques is desirable.
  • Broad engineering experience would be useful, as cryogenics interfaces with many disciplines within Tokamak Energy.
  • Some experience working with large scale cryogenic plant would be beneficial.

Benefits

  • 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays)
  • Company pension scheme
  • Eligible for company share option scheme
  • Company bonus scheme, discretionary, dependant on performance
  • Private medical insurance after 3 months service
  • Cycle to work scheme
