Reporting into the Head of Operations you will provide strategic operational management, strong leadership and control of a multi-disciplinary team comprising of engineering and supervisory resources at all levels and facilitation of strong links with other teams within and external to the project.

What you'll be doing

Through the Early Contractor Involvement Stage at multiply locations you will be responsible for the superstructure frame design/scope/interface management/logistics/supply chain selection working with the Balfour Beatty Design and Technical, Commercial and Procurement teams. 

You will work with the Operations Team, Design/Engineering Team, HSEQ Team, Commercial Team, Finance Team, Head of Design & Technical Director, Head of MEP Services and Head of  Commercial, Framework Manager, Account Director  and Health and Safety Director to ensure successful delivery of projects.

The following qualities/experience are essential:

Core

  • Able to clearly communicate the requirements of a safe system of work to ensure that these are followed accurately. Implements improvements to systems
  • Capable of taking ownership of tasks and communicating outcomes with clarity; experienced at encouraging direct reports to do the same and managing a team to ensure tasks are carried out effectively and key messages cascaded
  • Strong work ethic with flexibility to work unsociable hours/nights.
  • Holds a current driving license and CSCS Card. Must be SMSTS qualified
  • Excellent role model for development of junior staff and demonstrates required behaviours to align to business, project and team objectives
  • Provision of assistance and expert knowledge to reinforce the objectives of the work winning teams
  • External envelope of large structures/buildings experience

Health Safety & Environmental

  • Understands method statements and guides others in document production
  • Understands and can guide others in the principles of Accident / Incident Investigation
  • Good working knowledge of current H & S legislation
  • Innovative approach to enhancing safe systems of work

Engineering Control

  • Experienced in resource allocation and upskilling
  • Knowledge and experience of links between design teams and operational delivery
  • Identifies and champions lessons learned to ensure continual improvement in the business

Quality

  • Understands, implements and champions the Organisational Business Management Systems and processes involved
  • Clear understanding of the requirements for handover and self-certification of the works, including management experience of the same
  • Clear understanding of the ownership of handover and experience of the process

Productivity

  • Able to analyse and offer improvement on a fully resourced stage programme in the accepted format / software
  • Understands sub-contractor KPI’s and has wide ranging experience of using them to manage performance
  • Experience in the management of a wide range of construction operations, including phasing and contingency planning, together with testing and handover

Commercial

  • Used to setting targets in line with budget with agreement of the Head of Commercial and Commercial Manager(s)
  • Able to produce and manage a realistic financial forecast and track progress against programme
  • Identifies elements for cost recovery from others and guides junior members of staff in maintaining project records
  • Working knowledge of the NEC and other relevant forms of contract

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • Proven track record in managing and leading large teams in particular major projects in challenging locations
  • Proven track record of delivering large structures/external envelope facades
  • Experienced in the recruitment and development of talent within the business, including mentoring, stretch and challenge for junior team members and ensuring clearly defined development plans are in place
  • Strong leadership and management skills, including completion of formal qualification (eg ILM).
  • Has achieved professional accreditation and undertakes extra-curricular activities to advance the profession (eg ICE, IHT, CMI, CIOB)
  • Experienced in the delivery of lean construction techniques
  • Experienced in 4D planning
  • Experienced in NEC 3 Contracts
