Job description

As a Compliance Caseworker you’ll use your natural curiosity and investigatory skills to ensure that the right taxes have been paid. This will include analysing income and spending and working directly with a wide range of customers to understand their financial situations and how much tax they should be paying. Where necessary, you’ll educate the customer and ensure that they understand what they need to do in the future to ensure that they pay the right amount of tax.

This role is varied and includes a mix of desk-based investigation as well as visiting taxpayers’ premises. This could include offices, warehouses, pubs, banks, licensed gambling premises or anywhere a business operates from. You might need to stay away overnight in some cases.

Once you’ve completed your training you will be asked to work in any of our tax specialisms and although there are differences, the core of each role includes:

  • Analysing financial transactions such as income and expenditure.
  • Investigating information provided by our customers, and other people, to understand how much tax they should be paying.
  • Understanding how tax legislation applies to financial transactions.
  • Effectively working several compliance checks at any one time.
  • Communicating directly with customers.
  • Resolving disputes effectively and in a way that aligns with HMRC’s Customer Charter and Compliance Professional Standards.

To become the world’s most trusted tax authority we must continue to have high standards. We strive to put our customers at the heart of what we do by treating them fairly, being responsive, getting things right and being aware of their situations.

Working arrangements

Our Compliance Caseworkers can work between 7am and 8pm from Monday to Saturday, up to 37 hours each week.

To provide you with the best experience, we restrict training and onboarding programme interruptions. This means that we expect our caseworkers to contribute to the full-time programme of 12 weeks. Therefore, you need to be able to commit to working full time for the first 12 weeks of the programme.

After the mandatory full time period of 12 weeks, you will remain in the Central Training Unit (CTU) for a further 6 months.  If requested, part time and alternative working arrangements will be considered, working a minimum of 22 hours per week is required.

All HMRC colleagues and trainees work across a hybrid working week and are expected to attend a HMRC office location for a minimum of 60% of your working time.

Training

We can only offer one cohort start date which candidates must be able to commit to.

We understand that the tax system can be complex, and we want to ensure our people can offer the best service to our customers. There is an expectation that you will complete the full training programme within 18 months.  During this time, we may not permit you to apply for other roles on a level basis.  In exceptional circumstances, the programme duration may be extended, but it must be successfully completed in a maximum time of 30 months.  We will support you to reach the required standard of the training programme.  Should you fail to reach that standard we will use existing standard policies for managing poor performance where required, that may result in you leaving the programme.

There are learning activities scheduled throughout your training journey that are fixed and candidates must attend.

Annual Leave

During the first full 2 weeks of training, we will unfortunately be unable to honour leave.  Any further annual leave after this is at our discretion.

  • Analytical skills.
